Monthly Challenge: Fitness February
Show season is about to be upon us, even though we are still struggling to get through winter. If winter weather is keeping you out of the saddle, use the extra time to improve your riding by improving your fitness. During the Horsemastership Sessions in Wellington last month, Anne Kursinski stressed the importance of doing whatever you can to make yourself a better rider. These cold winter months are the perfect time to start these good habits.
At Saddletree Stables in Willow Springs, we are fortunate to have instructor Holly Sands in our barns. In addition to teaching riding lessons, Holly is also a personal trainer. This winter she is offering Rider Movement Workshops to improve fitness, balance, and coordination especially for riders. Contact me for more information.
Even on your own time, there are plenty of things you can do at the gym or at home to improve your riding. Increasing your stamina with running, swimming, or other cardio fitness activities is very helpful. Learning body control through pilates or yoga is an additional strength to your abilities as a rider. There are plenty of resources available online to start an exercise program, depending on your personal interest. Personally, I am a big fan of Blogilates and Betty Rocker. Of course, you should always consult your doctor before beginning any workout regimen.
As far as riding lessons go, you can look forward to more two-point, no stirrups, and no hands riding this month. Let's get ready for our best year of riding yet!
